The first members of the Herrold family, Christopher and Martha, arrived from Pennsyl- children, one of whom, Joseph, became a bridge builder and operator of salt and coal mines and later, a mill owner. Joseph's son, Thomas Jefferson Herrold, was the builder of the nominated property. The structure was erected in 1882; Thomas operated a grocery and meat packing plant in it. 1960 it became a tavern, its present use. The neighborhood is a secondary commercial zone in Athens, At one time it was the locale between the train depot and the Central Business District, and ladies of the evening due to the efforts of local citizens, assisted by the Athens City/County Planning Office, an effort has been made to encourage revitalization of the area.

The nominated building is a key commercial building in the neighborhood; it is being restored and will preserve the memory of the Herrold family and their contribution to Athens. He operated a grocery and meat packing plant there and made his residence on the top two floors until 1908 several times in subsequent years, but it continued to be a grocery until 1957. For the next three years it was used as a photographic studio, and in 1960 became a tavern.
