Description of the property

The Pomerene House is a residence located near the center of the small village of Berlin. is rectangular in plan, five bays wide across the front and three across on the sides. rear wing is at the southwest corner. A robust, massive cornice crowns the main section portion are identical and are long and narrow. The windows are segmental arched and of a set of doors with a segmental arched transom above. Above the main entrance is located on the east side. with elaborately carved balusters and an ornate newel post. Spacious parlors exist on the first floor. They feature ornate woodwork, marble fireplaces and interior window of 1877 is visible on one. The fireplaces in the two east parlors are rather uniquely An ornate iron fence, with gateposts borders the front of the house. Directly open space. The house A plain lower two story wing extends back from the southeast corner and a small one story of the house and is supported by large ornate brackets. Window openings in the main have elaborate wood hood mouldings. These ornamental features make this an Italianate style building. The main entrance is in the center of the front facade and consists a similar opening on the second floor. Originally it led onto a narrow balustraded walkway which ran across the length of the house and was supported by gigantic ornate located in the corners at a 45 degree angle to the rooms and are serviced by a single dences. Statement of significance

(in one paragraph) Atlee Pomerene, an early twentieth century statesman of national importance who was Administration. Pomerene achieved such national recognition from his role in these investigations that he was nominated as Ohio's favorite son candidate at the 1928 Peter Piersol Pomerene began his practice of medicine in Berlin in 1855. For local figure. In 1879 after fire had damaged his previous residence on this site, expenses : on the project which are now in the present owner's possession. The sons of Peter Pomerene, under his encouragement, all achieved college degrees. Pomerene, the second oldest son, attended the Hayesville Academy and graduated from Princeton in 1884. Two years later he achieved his law degree from Cincinnati Law being elected lieutenant governor in 1910. The following year he was elected to the U.S. Senate by the Ohio General Assembly.
He was reelected in 1916. In 1923, President former Vice President Charles G. Dawes. This building is the only residence where Senator Pomerene lived while in Holmes County which survives today.
