Statement of significance

(in one paragraph) Wellston was a center of the iron industry in Jackson County in the mid 19th century to the early 20th century. The town was platted in 1874, because of the systems were more developed. Joseph Clutts (1861-1927) arrived in Wellston in 1882 and established himself as owner of the Milton and Wellston Furnaces, the Spring Valley Iron Company and as holder of large tracts of timberland in Southeastern Ohio. All of these enterprises were associated with the production of iron, the mainstay of Wellston's economy at the time. Clutts leased and owned other operations pertaining to iron, coal and established himself as owner of the Wellston Sentinel newspaper and later as a with the decline in its economy.
The Clutts-Oths House is elegant and of quite large scale when contrasted with immediate area surrounding the house is comprised almost exclusively of commercial central business district. religion .archeology-historic X architecture Joseph Clutts, a major industrialist in Wellston, and architecturally as a fine example of early twentieth century residential architecture in Wellston. and then declined steadily due to problems in the iron industry including mounting expenses and competition with the industry in northern areas where transportation structures, making it one of the few remaining residential buildings left in Wellston's that it is a fine example of early 20th century craftsmanship and that virtually all elements of structural, ornamental and mechanical nature are intact. in the mid 1880's, the town experienced a boom in its economy which peaked in 1910 1902 1400-1499 1600-1699 intact and in an excellent state of preservation.The interior is remarkable in area's rich mineral resources.
