NOMINATION FORN 112 East Second Street Board of Trustees UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR HERITAGE CONSERVATION AND RECREATION SERVICE RECEIVED SEP + G 1980 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES INVENTORY -- NOMINATION FORM POMEROY HISTORIC DISTRICT (Amendment), Meigs County, Ohio CONTINUATION SHEET Extending the boundary lines of the Pomeroy Historic District will allow for the inclusion of three historically/architecturally significant buildings previously omitted from the district. These buildings are indicative of the political/social/ tieth century. The area to the northwest of these buildings as one walks up Second trict. A simple two story brick building of common bond construction, it is three bays The windows have Romanesque brick arches with two over two lights.
The large doors on the first floor have been altered to accommodate entrance and exit of modern fire engines from the building. A parking lot separates this building from the Sheriff's office and jail which is located to the southwest on Second Street. The front facade is of dressed stone while the other three facades are of brick. The interior has a wooden vaulted ceiling, a rose window on the side wall and a large, Romanesque arched, stained glass window on the front wall. A two story rear addition congregation, the sanctuary has remained in its original state. The Pomeroy Carnegie Library (#4) is brick, of Neo-Classical Revival architec- front first floor windows have triangular lights with wooden mullions over one over one There are plans to make this building more accessible to the handicapped.

The Pomeroy City Hall was erected in the 1880's to house the village offices and the Third Ward Fire Department. At one time the library also occupied its premises. The horses for the fire department had stalls in the rear of the building.

The library oper- Samuel Wyllis Pomeroy House; from there it moved to the First City Bank Building, the Farmers Bank Building and City Hall. In the early 1900's the town became aware of the libraries.. The town was to supply the lot and provide for the financing for the oper- ation of the library through tax funds. The Carnegie Corporation then provided funds vide for increased cultural opportunities in Pomeroy, even though the economy of the town was, by this period, in decline.
