Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) NOV 1 1980 Number 41 Orchard Street is one of the earliest Bracketed-Italianate designs in Northwest Cambridge.
It was erected only a year after Henry Greenough introduced the new style to Cambridge. Italianate features include the projecting bracketed eaves, win- dows with bracketed lintels, and double doors with arched upper panels of glass. The house was located near the Fitchburg Railroad Depot for the convenience of Boston commuters. The building, along with 45 Orchard Street, is the work of Joshua Fernald, a local housewright, and was built immediately after Orchard Street was platted for development. After the initial construction of these houses in 1846, development largely ceased until the late 1880s. The houses are accomplished if modest examples of the Bracketed Italianate style. 10.
