Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Deane-Williams House of 1848 is an Italianate villa built for Ezra Deane and George Williams. It is the only surviving example of an extraordinary house type of which only two examples are known to have been built in Cambridge. The body of the house is of brick covered with stucco, once painted and scored to resemble ashlar masonry. The three-story structure is capped by a hip roof of such a low pitch that it appears to be flat.. The roof has a very broad overhang supported by massive paired brackets. The elaborate ironwork of the porch, which is itself unique to Cambridge, is repeated on the second story balconies and originally was also on the grills of the diminutive thrid-floor windows. The floor-length first-story windows were originally framed by louvered shutters, long since removed.

This variation of the Italianate was employed elsewhere in Cambridge only in one other house, also built in 1848 but demolished in 1937. This house has been recorded by the Historic American Buildings Survey. 10.
