Date 1969, 1980 (over) UTM-BOSTON SOUTH 19/32548046B3220 M-5-73-075074 7. Historical data. Explain the historical/architectural importance of this area. The Harvard Square National Register District encloses within its boundaries the most famous of Cambridge's many squares. It includes two of the most famous of Cambridge's many squares. It includes two of the most significant surviving commercial buildings in Cambridge, 1384-1394 Massachusetts Avenue to 2-8 Boylston Street (which incorporates three eighteenth century commercial buildings), and Graduates Hall, begun in 1832. The Harvard Square Subway Kiosk, which was placed on the Register in 1977, is also in this district. 1.
1380-1394 Massachusetts Avenue and 2-8 Boylston Street (1782-1790; 1896) Ihe commercial block at the southeast corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Boylston Street is the most prominent building in Harvard Square, and incorporates the three oldest commercial buildings in Cambridge. Because of the size of the original parcel these buildings cannot be dated exactly, but include the Owen Warland tailor shop at 6-8 Boylston Street (1782 or before); the Joseph Stacey Read house at 1380-1382 Massachusetts Avenue (between 1782 and 1784), later Read's Store; and the Joseph Bartlett House at 1386 Massachusetts Avenue to 4 Boylston Street (between 1782 and 1790). These buildings were brought under single ownership in the nineteenth century and refaced with a common facade in 1896. 2.
Levi Farwel1 Tenant House (Farwell's Corner) (1820), 10-14 Boylston Street This early Greek Revival building appears on the 1833 Wadsworth map. It is a brick structure with brownstone lintels and a simple pro- jecting band of brick for a cornice. Levi Farwell was a prominent Cambridge eitizen and Deacon of the First Baptist Church from 1818-44. In addition he was a State Senator (1838); a Representative in the General Court (1823-25) (1833-35) and (1844); a Selectman (1817-21); Town Clerk (1817-21); and Town Treasurer -(1821-36). He played an -instrumental role in organizing a central market for Cambridge, and in the building of the Town House. (continued) 8. 3/73 INVENTORY FORM CONTINUATION SHEET MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL COMMISSION Office of the Secretary, Boston Commmity : Old Cambridge Forn No: OCI.7 Property Name: Harvard Square NRI page 2 Indicate each item on inventory form which is being continued below. 3. Abbott Building (1908), Newhal1 & Blevins, 1-7 Boylston Street A Georgian Revival flatiron building, with a recessed polygonal entrance vestibule flanked by monolithic granite columns. Built for Edwin Abbott, whose house is now the Longy School of Music, this commercial block stands on a triangular lot that survives from Cambridge's seventeenth century street pattern. 4. Graduates Hall - College House (1832, 1845, 1859), 1408-1442 Massachusetts Avenue This structure is one of the oldest buildings in Harvard Square.
First called Graduates Hall (because it housed law students) and later College House, this dormitory was extended in 1845 and 1859 until it stretched for 260 feet to Church Street. It contained stores on the ground floor and students rooms above. A further enlargement of 1870 added a Mansard roof and central pavilion. Graduates Hall, constructed of red brick, has its walls erected right on the property lines with no allowance for front or side yards. It was thus markedly different from the wooden dwellings of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries which had previously as shops. Graduates Hall is significant for pioneering the private dormitory, a building type that would dominate Harvard Square for the next three-quarters of a century. Of the eighteen private dormitories ultimately built, Graduates Hall is one of two built by the College. It was converted to offices in the 1920s.
The Harvard Square National Register District includes properties at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue, Boylston Street and Brattle Street (see Cambridge Community Development P. D. Quad Map 9). Boundaries were drawn to include buildings related to the commercial and transporta- tion activity which caused this area to become a focus in this area, but to exclude other buildings while including the street area of the Square itself. - END - Staple to Inventory form at bottom H/ve :.CommonP. -Causew the, Gres Bridg 3. 4. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12.
