Explain the historical/architectural importance of this area. Hubbard Park was a 6-acre estate reserved by Gardiner Hubbard for his mansion at 146 Brattle Street, built in 1850. Beginning in 1886, Hubbard had leading architects of the day design a ring of fine houses connected by a sweeping driveway around the periphery of the park, whic! gave the grounds a dignified unity and screened off the poorer Foster Street neighborhood to the south.
Although Hubbard's mansion at 146 Brattle Street was demolished in 1939, its grounds survive as Hubbard Park, completed in present form by 1907. The unusual aspect of the Hubbard development is that neither the expensive nor the modest portion was exploited with the aggressive rapidity of most real estate promotion. Hubbard seemed to keep the property as a kind of plaything, with a limited amount of development underway, even after he moved to Washington, D.C. in 1879.
A CIVic-minded, progressive citizen, he was responsible for many important local improvements, among them the Cambridge Gas Company in 1852, the promotion of the waterworks between 1852 and 1865, and the financing in 1856 of the first horse- car company in Boston - that which ran the line to Harvard Square - Hubbard was later associated with his son-in-law, Aleeanone Conhan and wasattinte ohn ontee Nat ional Geographic Society. Significant Buildings 1. 3 Mercer Circle (1885). One of the best Queen Anne houses in Cambridge, its: picturesque èlements include a deep . front perch with turned posts, a variety of surface textures and irregular window size and location. 4 Mercer Circle (1885). One of the earliest and simplest of the houses in the Hubbard development, its noteworthy features include the wrap-around segmental-arched porch and wavey, imbricated shingle pattern in the gable. 6. 9 Mercer Circle (132 Brattle Street] (1886). This Queen Anne house designed by the firm of Andrews & Jac ques has a number of picturesque elements, including a poly- gonal tower, projecting eaves, and three brick chimneys with corbelled caps and thin vertical chases. 7. 8. 9. 3 Hubbard Park (1887). This gambrel-roofed structure was designed by the firm of Cabot & Chandler in the Queen Anne style. 5 Mercer Circle (1887). Architects Andrews & Jacques designed this shingle-covered Queen Anne house. 8 Hubbard Park (1888). An exuberant Queen Anne design by Cabot & Chandler, has tross gables and an octagonal tower. 10.
32 Hubbard Park (1890)- This Queen Anne house has a gable-on-hip roof and wall covering of wood shingles. 11. 14 Hubbard Park (1892). The well-known firm of Longfellow, Alden & Harlow (designers of City Ha1l) designed this handsome Colonial Revival house. The gabled center pavilion contains an oculus window, a Palladian motif and the columned entrance portico. 20 Hubbard Park (1892). Also a Colonial Revival house designed by the firm of Longfellow, Alden & Harlow. Symmetrical three-bay composition is anchored by a projecting pedimented portico; 13. 26 Hubbard Park (1894). Architect F.R. Allen designed this Queen Anne/Tudor Revival house. Its Medieval features include the diamond-paned stair windows and elaborately half-timbered end gables. 14. 2 Mercer Circle (1894). Architect J.T. Kelley designed this Queen Anne house which features stuccoed and half-timbered cross gables.

Lillian Nutting House, 12 Hubbard Park (1908). This cross-gabled Tudor Revival house of shingle and stucco was designed by architect Edward B. Stratton. 16. 2 Hubbard Park (1909): This late Queen Anne style residence with stained wood shingles was designed by the firm of Morrill & Kilham. 17. Revel W. Beach House, 19 Hubbard Park (1913). This gambrel-roofed Colonial Revival house was designed by architect Allen W. Jackson. 15 Hubbard Park (1914). Newhall & Blevins designed this gabled Medieval Revival style house of stucco. Wide, flattened bow windows flank the entrance. 19. George Paine House, 6 Hubbard Park (c.1918). The architect of this stucco-covered Colonial Revival house is not known. 20. John L. Warren House, 5 Hubbard Park (1922)- Notable features of this Georgian Revival house are the projecting entrance vestibule, sun porch and double doors. This was residence of John L. Warren, a Boston attorney. 21. William F. Harris House, 7 Mercer Circle (1922). This simple three-bay, stucco-covered house in the Colonial Revival style is distinguished by its handsome Ionic entrance porch and gable roof of slate. William Harris was a professor on the Harvard faculty.
The Hubbard Park National Register District includes all of Hubbard Park and Mercer Circle and portions of Sparks Street.(see Cambridge Community Development P.D. Quad 12).
