Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Kidder-Sargent-McCrehan house is the finest rural vernacular example of the Federal style in Northwest Cambridge and the only pre- NOV 1 nineteenth century farmhouse that has survived with its original features intact. The curious siting, at an angle to Rindge Avenue, allows the front entrance to face east in the colonial 1980 manner. The house has a typical eighteenth century four-room, center-hall plan, but reveals the Federal style in the small second-story windows, short eaves, and sidelight entry. The Kidder family acquired the property upon which the house sits in 1706 and it remained in the family until 1835 when the land and the present house were sold to Solomon Sargent.
Sargent eventually sold sections of the surrounding farm acreage as building.lots during the 1840s, a time of increasing residential development in the North Cambridge area, and eventually sold the house and its present lot to Jeremiah McCrehan in 1867. The house remained in the McCrehan family until the 1940s. The house is valuable for its well-preserved condition and lts nistorical significance as the only eighteenth century farmhouse to survive on its original site. It was 10.
