Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The house at 10 Chester Street is an elaborate vernacular dwelling which epitomizes the nineteenth century suburban development in North Cambridge. detail and complex forms of the Queen Anne and Colonial Revival .. styles applied to a modest Mansard structure built in 1866. The extensive alérations commissioned by Kingsley in 1890 still dominate the building, although the rear ell was enlarged in ... 1919 to accommodate a hospital, and the house continues in use as a nursing home today.
The entrance porch features paired fluted columns raised on pedestals supporting a pediment with an ornate foliate center- plece of molded plaster in the tympanum. A curyed porch section wraps around the building on the west side of the entrance, linking the projecting facade additions to the mass of the original 1866 house. The building is dominated by a massive three-story cylin- drical tower articulated with Colonial Revival details occupying the western corner of the house. A band of plaster foliate decoration integrates the tower with the main house by carrying the cornice line around the tower, emphasizing its additional height. The tower is topped by an independent conical roof, terminating in a slender finial. The original sweeping curve OI tne mansara rool ls stlll very much in evidence richly detailed with scalloped slates.
During the 1890 remodelling, an ell was addded. While of a different scale from the original structure, it does not intrude on the architectural character of the house. 10.
