Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This pressed brick double house is of considerable architectural importance, since freestanding brick examples of the Greek Revival style are relatively rare in Cambridge. The thin and elegant brick molding that caps the main facade is Greek Revival In style, differing from earlier Federal designs by representing a complete entablature, not just a cornice.
Both of these houses also employ a subtle raked cornice of corbelled brick to cap the gabled walls. 72-74 Hampshire Street was the home of Rufus Lamson, a from 1854-1855.
