Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This Federal style residential block is the oldest structure known to be standing in East Cambridge, and the only one remaining of an unknown number built It first appears in a real estate transaction in 1821, when it was sold by the Corporation to Governor Christopher Gore. in tavat cambrideo taine in East Cambridge real estate on his own account. The block contains four houses. The houses at each end of the row are entered through doorways placed in the center of each facade, while the two houses in the midale of the row are entered from Gore Street and appear to have typical sidehall plans Only the building facing Gore Street remains substantially unchanged.
The pedimented gable is now asphalt sided, but was presumably flush board; on the brick wall below, only the deeply recessed center entrance relieves the undetailed facade. The unit at 49 Gore has been remodelled with arched windows and an additional story, while a mansard roof has been added to number 51. 10.
