Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Lowell School has the distinction of being the only surviving frame school remaining in Cambridge.
It was designed by the father-son team of architects;James and George Fogerty, prolific Cambridge designers whose work included schools, firehouses, factories and over 100 Cambridge residences. The design of the Lowell School reflecits important advances in educational policy and school design of the 1880s. By this time classes were graded, each in its own room. Lower grades were separated from high school in different building. Improved sanitation and heating facilities had also been developed, and school grounds were enlarged to provide adequate recreational space. The Lowell School was built in 1883 at a cost of $12,943 which included land, construction and furnishings. Ihe two-story, rectangular plan frame building rests on a brick foundation. Its low-pitched hip roof has a projecting cornice supported by paired brackets.
Except Ior the brackets, the building is otherwise devoid of ornamentation; such austerity was considered appropriate for educational buildings, and was done for reasons of economy as well. 10.
