Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Alpheus MOead House (1867) is a typical center entrance Mansard house of the mid-1860s, and one of the best houses of its type remaining on the Avenue.
Original features include the entrance porch with quadrant struts, . the alternating gabled and segmental dormers, and projecting bracketed cornice. Alpheus Mead was a local butcher. Although aluminum siding has been added, the original trim was retained and the house could easily be returned to its original clapboarding underneath. This house, with the Daniel Snow and R. H. Farwell Houses, represents the only three residences in the same proximity which document the style and scale of houses which once lined this route. Intensive development along Massachusetts Avenue has already transformed what was once, in this section, a spacious residential streetscape into commercial uses and new construction. This cluster of houses provide the only visual evidence óf the earlier listory of this road. 10.
