Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Andrew Newman house presents an unusual architectural departure from the standard Federal period house: it is a one-story, center-hall building with a large central chimney.
The chimney and compact massing recall earlier eighteenth century structures: The Newman house is one of only two surviving houses of its type in Cambridgeport. : Built on land once owned by Peter Tufts, the house's first inhabitant was Andrew Newman, a Cambridgeport rope- maker. 10.
