Explain the historical/architectural importance of this area. The proposed Salem Street/Auburn Street district contains the oldest houses remaining in Cambridgeport. The small scale of the buildings and the narrow streets retain the village quality of Cambridgeport at the beginning of the nineteenth century. ment originally focused on Lafayette Square and the meetinghouse located just north of Massachusetts Avenue. Little development occurred south -f the Salem Street/Auburn Street district until after 1850. Particularly noteworthy is the Federal house at 15 Salem Street, a rare two-story brick dwelling, and a pair of modest workers! cottages dating from 1803-1804. 1.
