Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) 086L$ 1ON The house at 145 Elm Street was the fiest of four brick houses built by the Sands family, who operated bricky, ards in Cambridge for over for its association with the early brick ndustry, and architectually as one of the few surviving Federal period brick houses ir Cambridge.
The Sands family was involved in the Cambridge brick industry through the turn of this century. John and Ivory Sands first entered the trade in the 1830s, working at the claybeds on the Miller's River on Cambridge Street. These pits were among the first clay deposits to be commercially worked in Cambridge. The Iyory Sands house is late Federal in form but shows the influence of the approaching Greek Revival in its high-pitched gable roof. The facade has a typical five-bay configuration with a center entrance reflecting the two-room, center hall plan. The window openings have sandstone lintels and sill, 10.
