Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) A brick Queen Anne structure, 11 Russell Street was designed by Frank Maynard Howe in 1879 for Lawrence Porter Soule.
Its complex design and fine craftsmanship represent the peak of vernacular Queen Anne design in Cambridge. Soule, a local mason and builder, was a typical entrepreneur and skilled craftsman, one of many who transformed North Cambridge from farmland to affluent suburb. Soule's work in Cambridge appears in numerous other Cambridge buildings. Frank Maynard Howe was an apprentice with the well-known firm of Ware & Van Brunt. In 1879, during his partnership with Van Brunt, his design for 11 Russell Street was published in American Architect & Building News. This is a rare documented example of his early independent work. The two-and-one-half story brick house in the Queen Anne style has overtones of the Stick Style and Panel Brick style. Its massing, rich textural variety and robust detail make it one of the finest brick Queen Anne residences in Cambridge.
Architect-designed houses in North Cambridge are rare; for this reason and because of the high quality of the design, the Soule house is especially noteworthy. ot E0 This house was voted eligible for the National Register in 1978. 10.
