Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This important grouping of urban rowhouses was built in 1874, striking a clearly urban note. This type of awelling resulted from the growing pressure for housing and the need for denser lana occupation.

Their continuous street facades and masonry appearance created a street- scape very different from that produced by the surrounding detached wooden houses. The houses feature elements of the Panel Brick style, with red and black bricks creating ornamental banding, a distinctive ornamentation popular in the 1870s. All five houses in the grouping are crowned by a steeply pitched mansard roof in order to provide a more seryiceable headroom in the attic story. Present owners; 30 Pearl Street: Edward D.
