Description X excellent _ unaltered A original site The Frank Haines House is a large, frame, Queen Anne dwelling on a residential large (2.62 acres) shaded lot that has always been associated with the property. The 2 1/2 story house is basically square in plan, has a central hip roof, and is sided with narrow beveled siding currently painted yellow. The foundation is coursed, rock-faced The roof of the Haines House is covered in rectangular, hexagonal, and diamond- shaped gray slates. Metal cresting, 4 tall corbelled chimneys, small shed dormers and a large hipped wall dormer at the facade create an interesting roofline. The large dormer has a central 8/2 double-hung sash window, flanked by 2 smaller windows, The cornice of the house is boxed, with small dentils at the frieze. The exterior of the Haines House is marked by a variety of decorative elements.
There is a 2-story bay at the SW side of the house, an elaborate porte-cochere with heavy Eastlake trim at the NE side, and small frame back porch with delicate lattice. The large round tower at the E corner has a conical roof, small attic windows, decorative spacious veranda porch is perhaps the house's most outstanding feature, with its turned porch posts, ballisters, dentils and small spindles at the frieze, and cut-out cresting at the east end. Directly above it, leading out from the second floor is a balcony with conical roof and decorative elements to match the porch. The house has a variety of window treatments, ranging from simple 1/1 sash, to double windows at the facade with transom and intricately molded round-arch lintels, to a single pane beveled glass window on the second floor, to the large mullion windows at the front parlor and dining room.
The front entrance to the house is composed of double wooden screen doors, wooden exterior doors with window lights, elaborately molded plaster walls and tile floor in the foyer, and the wooden interior doors with beveled glass The interior of the Haines House, like the exterior, is richly adorned and virtually varies from room to room, with cherry used in the parlor, oak in the sitting room and halls, sycamore in the dining room, and bedrooms in yellow pine, chestnut, and redwood. Floors are oak. Remaining in the house are 5 fireplaces, all with classical fluted columns supporting the mantels, mirrors above, and Italian ceramic tiles surrounding them. The central hall has an open stairway of elaborately carved quarter-sawn oak, and interesting and dumbwaiter complete the turn-of-the-century interior.
