Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) No. 34 Essex Street was built between 1844 and 1850 for Jeseph-thompson Abbot by Jacob Chickering. Abbot was the son of Benjamin (Jx.) and Mary Abbot, born in 1809. In 1832 he married Betsey Kershaw, who kept the house in the family until her death in 1900. Jacob Chickering was both builder and developer, buying the undeveloped property in 1844 and selling it with a dwelling house by 1850. The charming Gothic cottage contains some of Andover's most lively ornamentation in the style.
Although disproportionately scaled telative to the overall composition, the architectural motifs are highly developed on the individual level. Fanciful bargeboards and miniature wooden cresting, sharp cross-gables, and a delicate, academic portico-- unrepeated in Andover-- are the the most outstanding features of this house. The J.T. Abbot House is notable (1) for its design and construction by Jacob Chickering, Andover's leading architectural designer of the mid-19th century, and (2) as an excellent example of Andover's Gothic Revival architecture. The property retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting, and meets Criteria A and C of the National Register. 10.
