Description of the property

The Jones Block stands on the east side of Park Street south of School Street in Adams Center. The building is a three-story brick structure with a rectangular floor plan that covers all of its lot, except for a small portion of the lot's east end. The structure is built of red brick laid up in seven rows of stretchers to each row of alternating headers and stretchers; the facade is faced with pressed brick laid up in stretcher bond. The structure is enclosed by a low sloping roof which declines from west to east. With the exceptions of a small one-story section of the north elevation and most of the south elevation, the building's elevations are free-standing. The facade (west elevation) is asymmetrical at the first story and symmetrical above.

The first storyis framedby 5 cast-iron columns with panelled faces and moulded capitals, which support a stell "I" beam (partially concealed by modern siding). Moving south to north the cast-iron columns frame the entry to an enclosed alley, one storefront, a single entry to the upper stories and a second storefront. The storefronts have been altered by enclosing former transoms with wooden siding and by the addition of tapestry brick bases and aluminum a modern aluminum and glass door. The second and third stories each contain six windows, Las door., Tho second window and door trim. In addition the building's main entry has evenly spaced except for the center two which are more closely set than the rest. Each window contains 1/1 sash surmounted by a semi-circular transom, the whole set in an arched brick surrounded with a dressed sandstone sill.

Window arches at the second story are made up of radiating bricks with an archivolt of moulded brick trimmed with engaged spheres; except for the central two windows which have a plain moulded brick archivolt; all second story arches also have sandstone keystones. Third story allows window surroundsare identical to those of the second story's two center windows but lack keystones. Beneath the roof line is a shallow corbel table above which is a pressed metal cornice consisting of an egg-and-dart moulding surmounted by a plain frieze, dentils and acanthus modillions. Set north of center on the facade's second and third stories is an iron fire escape, added in the twentieth century. The north elevation is asymmetrical and it is blocked by an attached structure at the first story at its west end.

This elevation contains a variety of window sizes, all but two added window openings have sills of gray marble and heads of low brick arches made up of two rows of headers. The first story windows (partially blocked) contain 2/2 sash while two windows at the second story and four at the third contain 1/1 sash with rectangular one-pane transoms. Both the second and third stories of the elevation's westernmost bay contain single windows which are identical to those of the facade. Other windows contain a variety of sizes of 1/1 sash. The rear (east) elevation is asymmetrically arranged, containing 5 windows and one bulk head at the cellar; 3 blocked double windows, a rectangular opening for a covered alley, and one door at the first story; 6 windows arranged in three pairs at the second story; and three double windows and one smal1 (added) window at the third story.

Al1 single windows have low arched heads made up of two rows of headers, while double windows have arches of three rows of brick headers. Most second and third story sash is 1/1 surrounded by a rectangular transom. Its westernmost bay contains windows identidal to those of the facade. Other windows on this elevation originally faced into the covered alley which passes beneath the structure's south end; however, most of these windows have been blocked.

As originally built, the Jones Block was two stories high with a bay window centered at the second story. Around the turn of the century, the present third story was added in the same style as the original structure and the bay window was replaced by two arched windows at the facade's center. Subsequent alterations to the block consist of the re-building of storefronts within the original iron framing, the blocking of facade transoms and the erratic blocking of windows and side and rear elevations.

Statement of significance

/Architect Architect Unknown Statement of Significance (in one paragraph) lhe Jones Block possesses integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship, as well as historical associations with the rapid commercial development of Park Street at the turn of the century. As one of the best remaining structures from this period it meets criteria C of the NRHP. The Block was built as a two-story block in 1895 for Albert Jones, a clerk for the merchant tailor firm of C.E. Legate. Upon completion, the Block's first story was occupied by the Bay State Clothing House, of which Jones was the manager and, presumably, owner. Also contained in the building's second story was Adam's Hibernian Hall. Perhaps in response to the growing local demand for commer- cial space or perhaps by original plan, the Jones Block was enlarged to three full stories height in the early twentieth century.

At the time of this enlargement an original central bay window was removed from the second story, the original cornice was removed and an identical new cornice constructed at the top of the new third story. Details such as the moulded brick window arches of the original structure were matched by the use of nearly identical materials, as was the pressed red brick of the building's facade. Fenestration of the third story's rear wall suggests that this addition originally contained a public hall. In its present form, the Jones Block preserves the basic features of the large-scale commercial architecture which began to be built on Park Street in the 1890s, viz. construction of the facade to the property/ sidewalk line, cast-iron post-and-linted storefronts at the first story, offices and public halls on the upper stories and brick construction.
