The most serious of them, by death, then
injury, then recorded damage. The accounts are quoted exactly as the
forecast office filed them.
A tornado touched down near Prospect Lake in North Egremont at 1906 EST and moved in an easterly direction at about 40 mph, crossing into Great Barrington and then Monterey. The last damage occurred near Morley Hill in Sandisfield at 1924 EST. Officially, the track extended from one mile southeast of north Egremont to one and one-half miles southwest of West Otis. Three people were killed when the automobile they were in was lifted several hundred feet in the air and then dropped into a wooded hillside. Two of the dead were male students around 20 years old and the other was their male teacher, who was approximately in his late 50s. Twenty-four people were injured. National Weather Service investigation classified this storm as a "devastating" tornado. Property damage (according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency) included the following: two homes were destroyed, eleven homes had major damage, nineteen homes had medium damage, thirty-four homes had minor damage; one rental unit had major damage, three had medium damage, and four had minor damage. Many of the injuries were from flying glass. One motorist was very lucky when the tremendous force of the wind drove a large wooden timber through the door and front seat of his van and he escaped with his life and a hip injury. A nursing home lost its roof and buildings at the local fairgrounds were destroyed. A gas station was destroyed. A truck smashed into a supermarket causing a large hole in the building. Many roads were blocked for more than 24 hours by numerous fallen trees. Total damage was estimated at between $20 and $25 million, with many losses covered by insurance. Debris was carried more than 45 miles to the northeast to Belchertown in eastern Hampshire County, where a racing ticket from the fairgrounds was found along with white, corrugated plastic roofing material. Other debris was found in Huntington and Montgomery in western Hampden County, about 25 miles away. The last deaths caused by a tornado in Massachusetts occurred in 1979. (M20V, M20V, M58V)
Lenox Police reported that a 56 year old man was killed when a large tree came down in the travel line onto his pickup truck at the intersection of Route 7 and Old Stockbridge Road. Report was obtained via a local newspaper.
A roof was partially ripped off a horse barn and several trees were reported down due to strong thunderstorm winds at the Aspinwall Equestrian Center off Route 7A, Main Street, in Lenox. ||A large tree and power lines were downed on Route 7 and 20, Pittsfield Road, just north of the entrance to the Aspinwell Shops due to strong thunderstorm winds. A vehicle was hit with debris resulting in minor injuries to a person. ||Along East Dugway Road, 10 trees and 8 utility poles were reported downed due to strong thunderstorm winds. Two cars were struck by downed trees and 2 people were treated for minor injuries. ||Trees were reported down near the Eastover Resort on East Road in Lenox due to strong thunderstorm winds.
Trees and wires were reported down in Great Barrington due to strong thunderstorm winds. One downed tree and wires trapped 2 people in their vehicle, as a tree fell outside of The Country Dining Room Antiques Store on Main Street. The tree snapped in half and knocked down a utility pole on Rosseter Street, downing live power lines and falling on top of the vehicle, trapping a woman and her husband inside.||The woman sustained a broken neck, and may be permanently paralyzed.
In Lenox, numerous trees were reported down due to strong thunderstorm winds|along East Street between New Lenox Road and Housatonic Street, on Kemble Street at the Shakespeare and Company Campus and on Walker Street at the Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum.
Heavy rainfall caused flooding of roads, homes and other crucial pieces of infrastructure throughout the City of North Adams. City Mayor Jennifer Macksey reported approximately 10 to 15 roads washed out with debris coming down the mountainside. Road collapses occurred across portions of Chruch Street, State Street and Brooklyn Street. Estimated cost of repairs was $1.5 million.
An estimated one thousand or more trees and branches were snapped or uprooted around the Mass Audubon's Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, north of of the Town of Lenox. Damage was also observed along the trails as well as a window breaking in the office. Preliminary damage estimates were up to $500,000.
Heavy rainfall from thunderstorms heavily damaged a 1.5 mile stretch of the Berry Pond Circuit Road in the Pittsfield State Forest in Pittsfield. As a result of the flash flooding, 13 popular campsites at Berry Pond had to be closed for the remainder of the summer season due to the damaged access road. A local newspaper reported that when the flash flooding occurred, campers had to be evacuated before water cascading down the mountain gouged out the paved road. The damage to the road and eleven stone culverts was estimated to be significant and will cost between $173,000 and $277,000 to repair.
Lightning struck a barn at the Bonnie Lea Farm in Williamstown at approximately 1630 LST. The lightning then spewed from a circuit box, igniting a nearby bale of hay, which then spread through the barn.||In addition to significant structural damage to the barn, three to four thousand bales of hay, a horse trailer and equipment, and several all-terrain vehicles were also destroyed.||No injuries were reported.
A National Weather Service Storm Survey Team found straight line wind damage in North Adams. Most of the damage was confined to a one half mile, by two block area on the campus of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.||Significant roof damage occurred to three college dormitories, mostly from tin flashing that was torn off due to the strong winds. In addition, several trees and large tree limbs were also downed, one of which smashed a car in the parking lot near the alumni office on Montana Street. Approximately 400 students were evacuated due to the damage.||The damage was consistent with maximum wind speeds of near 100 MPH.
A portion of Weatogue Road near Bartholomew's Cobble Reservation was washed out due to heavy rainfall in the Town of Sheffield. In addition, a section of Rannapo Road was close closed due to water over the road up to 1.5 feet deep.
The combination of heavy rainfall and mud and debris blocking storm drains resulted in flash flooding across the City of North Adams. Several roadways had to be shut down including Church Street, Mansion Street and River Street. Water and debris also covered portions of Ashland Street, Eagle Street and Elmwood Avenue.
Survey team observed several structures with shingle damage to roofs. Many limbs and several trees were knocked down. Upon observation these trees were determined to be shallow rooted. Roofs dislodged from clubhouse and dugout of Waconah Park baseball stadium. Eyewitnesses with various vantage points reported observing rotating debris consistent with a tornado. Additional reports indicate a portion of the fencing at Waconah Park was also knocked down, and bleachers along the left field were pushed backward. In addition, trees and wires were downed on Tyler Street and Woodlawn Avenue, and two moored motor boats at Burbank Park were flipped over and partially submerged. There was also a report of a tree falling on a house on Charles Street. Top winds estimated at 70 mph.
Clarksburg Town Administrator Carl McKinney reported Millard Avenue suffering serious damage from heavy rainfall. In addition, the Clarksburg Town Hall basement was taking on water.
Early on August 16, lightning from a thunderstorm struck a house in North Adams, narrowly missing a man. Lightning produced a hole inside a bedroom and damaged a peak in the house. A small fire, started by the same lightning bolt, briefly flared up. Firemen were also deployed to the house, but the fire had been extinguished before they arrived.
A cold front, moving into a very warm humid and unstable airmass, produced scattered thunderstorms across Berkshire County during the afternoon of August 3. One of the storms became severe, as wind gusts knocked trees down in the town of West Stockbridge.
