Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This house was thought to be built by Luther Winslow, Jr., who went to sei and died of yellow fever in the West Indies and was buried at Dead Man's Chest. Winslow married in 1795 and probably built his house by that date. The 14-story farmhouse is a fine example of 18th century vernacular architecture which has remained remarkably intact. Typical features include the 5-bay plan, large central chimney, clapboard sheathing, pilasters framing the center door, transom lights, 12/12 sash, corner boards and wide entablature. The fieldstone wall and wooden . fencing in front of the property accentuate the rural, late 18th century feeling. The Winslow House is one of six in the Steep Brook area considered to be the best representatives of the pre-industrial period of the city's history.

These houses along North Main Street give testimony both to Steep Brook's early prominence over the southern area of the town and to the original agricultural character of Fall River. Their small scale, rural setting and linear relationship to one another stand in sharp contrast to the development that overtook the settlement with the construction of the first textile mill in 1811. As a well-detailed and largely intact late 18th century house representative of the early settlement era in the city's history, the Winslow House meets criteria A and C of the National Register, individually. *Regtstor, 30i72 dua11y. 10.
