Bibliography and/or references (such as local histories, deeds, assessor's records, early maps, etc.) IAON 1980 INVENTORY FORM CONTINUATION SHEET MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL COMMISSION Office of the Secretary, Boston Commmity : Mid Cambridge Form No: MC II.B.30 William F. Bradbury House Property Name: (1877) , 369 Harvard Strpet Indicate each item on inventory form which is being continued below. The William F. Bradbury House is important as a rare example in Cambridge of a pretentious single family residence in the paneled brick style then being used extensively in the Back Bay. The Bradbury House shows an emphasis on the use of flat, incised decorative detail, rather than on the plastic modelling of earlier Second Empire houses. The patterned brickwork and incised decoration of the stone window lintels foreshadow the decorative motifs of the Queen Anne style.
The last three decades of the nineteenth century were a time of great expansion in Cambridge. The population and the number of buildings vastly increased. Many tracts of land in Mid Cambridge were still un- developed, providing room for substantial new houses. Many of the area's fine residences were built after 1873, among them the Bradbury House, whose original owner was William F. Bradbury, at one time the Head Master of the Cambridge Latin School. The Bradbury is of further importance as one of only ten surviving single family residences on Harvard Street, which was once lined with substantial homes set on elevated sites above the street. The William F. Bradbury House is significant under Criterion A for its importance in the development of Harvard Street and Dana Hill, and under Criterion C as -an important example of its type and style.
