It is thought to have originally been a depot either for the Wa tertown Branch or Mount Auburn Railroad.
Its flat roof forms a projecting lid, which extends very far and is supported by extraordinary large brackets. An elaborate wooden hood shelters the entrance. Its precise lineage has yet to be fully documented, but its profile strongly suggests its use as which served Cambridge. Despite its relocation, erved cahtr dge a depot for one of the early railroads this building is one of the few remnants of the commuter railroads responsible for Cambridge's distinct development. Its unique form and its significance for Cambridge development make it worthy of recognition. 10.

The house at 259 Mount Auburn Street is a miniature version of the exaggerated Tuscan architecture seen elsewhere in Cambridge in the Deane Williams House at 21-23 Fayette Street (1848; listed on the National Register) and the Valentine-Fuller House at 125 Prospect Street (also 1848; demolished, 1937). the roof projects as much as five feet and the overhang is supported has tive In these elaborate Italianate villas, by paired brackets. Both were built of masonry, with stucco scored to resemble flush boarding, and used cast iron balconies and porches for decorative effect. The 259 Mount Auburn Street House cannot be fully documented, but clearly draws from the same spirit that motivated the architects of the elaborate villas of Mid Cambridge. The diminutive scale of its main block, 22 by 18 feet, contrasts strikingly with its strongly projecting overhang and almost lacy brackets.
The house offers a clear expression of the term "vernacular" as applied to a popular interpretation of an academic architectural vocabulary. This building meets Criterion C for its unique design.
