Bibliography and/or references (such as local histories, deeds, assessor's records, early maps, etc.) NOV 1 4 1980 MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL COMMISSION Office of the Secretary, Boston MC Mid Cambridge II.B.23 Property Name: The Francis J. Child House Indicate each item on inventory form which is being continued below. The Francis J.
Child House is architecturally significant for its interesting combination of the Mansard style with the applied gothic decoration one might find in an A. J. Downing cottage. According to Report Iwo: Mid Cambridge [1860-63] of the Survey of Architectural History in Cambridge, "Mansard roofs appeared frequently on smaller houses of the period, especially on one-story cottages. Pro- viding a full second story, the mansard increased the space and comfort of these modest dwellings" (p: 71). The Child House is composed of two mansard roofed blocks, each one symmetrically arranged but both combined to form an asymmetrical massing. This arrangement is somewhat unusual for the early 1860's which tended to favor more formal organiza- tions. Cottage architecture at this time was heavily influenced by the books of A. J.
Downing such as Cottage Residences (1842) and The Archi- tecture of Country Houses (1850). Downing's theories on cottage design Incorporated the picturesque aesthetic charactérized by elements of irregularity, roughness, and variety. Also important were the integra- tion of the house with its naturat setting and the use of ornament to ¡animate the cottage facade. Elements of this design influence may be seen at 67 Kirkland Street. The jigsaw-cut cornice boards are a common cottage decorative feature. The veranda is an important means of linking the house to its surroundings and the/ tall chimney stacks and slender porch posts enliven the facade and add to its variety. The Francis J. Child House meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places.
