In 1852, the house became the home for a group of Harvard students, who later became prominent scholars in their respective fields: Joseph Winlock, George Martin Lane, Josiah Witney and Benjamin Apthorp Gould. It is likely that during the early 1850s, Winlock installed an observatory containing one of the largest telescopes in the country behind the Mann House. The name "Cloverden" is generally attributed to Josiah Whitney who coined the phrase to describe "an old Bachelor Hall." 10.

Cloverden is a center entrance, five bay variant of the local Greek Revival vernacular with a Doric portico across the entire front of the house. It is comparable to several other notable Cambridge houses of the period, notably the S. D.
Brown House at 112 Brattle Street (1846, O1d Cambridge National Register District), the Elizabeth Frost Tenant House at 35 Bowdoin Street (1812, National Register), and the twin Greek Revival houses at 1707-1709 and 1715-1717 Cambridge Street (1845, National Register). The house was built in 1837 for Mary Ann Fales, about whom nothing is known. In 1852, the house was rented to Josiah Dwight Whitney, a professor of geology at Harvard for whom Mount Whitney is named.
Whitney's tenancy in the house, which coincided with his pioneering work at Harvard with Louls Agassiz, was described as tollows: It chanced about the time when Josiah Whitney was establishing himself in his new profession, that he made the acquaintance of two "funny boys," friends of his brother William, - Francis Child, Later the great Anglo-saxon scholor, and George Martin Lane, atinist, both then, as for the remainder of their working lives, teachers in Harvard College. To the younger Cambridge set of the mtnderoro Ma wonkinge day belonged also Benjamin Apthorp Gould, the astronomer, who at that time was determining longitudes for the Coast Survey.
"Gould, Lane, and I," Whitney wrote his brother, ,"have been trying a nice, quiet and retired house in Cambridge, .for the purpose of establishing an old Bachelor Hall, to which by a sort of counting our chickens before they were hatched, we have given the name of "Clover Den.'" Fales After no little trouble with landlords who were "afraid of letting a house to such young men," Clover Den finally materialized itself in April of 1852, in the old Mann house at the elbow of Follen Street, close to the Cambridge green and just off what is now Massachusetts Avenue, but was then "the road to Porter's." The three original "denizens" added to their number another astronomer, Jospeh Winlock, who had already begun his work on the "Nautical Almanac," and a man and his wife by the name of Marshall, who between them kept the house. The memory of Clover Den has not yet faded out of Cambridge.
All four of its inhabitants were on the way to distinction; Lane was all his life a famous wit, and between linguists and men of science, the College and Coast Survey, when all roads led to Boston, the Den entertaining largely, brought together a brilliant company of guests. During this time Doctor Gould and Professor Winlock established a small observatory in the bakk yard of Cloverden, said to be the first observatory in Cambridge. The house was purchased in 1866 by Mary Mann, mother of Horace Mann, who moved from Concord when her sons were ready to attend Harvard.
The house stayed in the Mann family until about 1890. Cloverden is significant under Criterion B for its associations with Whitney, Gould, and Winlock, and under Criterion C as an important example of the Greek Revival style.
