The large chimneys, hip roof, symmetrical proportions, and fan-lighted entrance are characteristic of Federal architecture of the first quarter of the nineteenth century. The wildows are fairly close to the cornice.
The original 6/6 sash has been replaced by 2/2 sash. David Frost was a painter and glazier and was the son of the original owner Elizabeth Frost. Three years earlier, his mother had built the house next door which she used as an income producing property. 10. The David Frost House is an important surviving structure from the period between the end of the Revolutionary War and the suburbaniza- tion of Old Cambridge that followed the establishment of high frequency public transportation in 1826. During this period practically all new investment and construction took place in the new settlements at East Cambridge and Cambridgeport, while Old Cambridge essentially stagnated.
Apart from the college, the primary economic activity in Old Cambridge at this time was truck farming, and North (now Massachusetts) Avenue was sparsely settled with modest farmhouses and tenant houses. ended abruptly with the opening of the railroad station at Porter Square in 1843 and the establishment of a horse car route from Porter Square to Harvard Square in 1856.. Massachusetts Avenue immediately became the most prestigious address in Cambridge for the Boston businessmen looking for a spacious avenue on which to build a suburban showplace, and several modest houses were moved off the Avenue to make room. In the case of the David Forst House, relocation came in 1889 to provide a site for 1705 Massachusetts Avenue, a large Colonial Revival house, by the archi- tectural firm of Van Brunt & Howe.
The Frost House was moved west of the neighborhood to a more modest neighborhood then in the process of development. The Frost House is significant under Criterion A for its role in the development of the North Avenue section of Cambridge, and as repre- sentative of a period in Cambridge history when little other building took place. It is also significant under Criterion C as a modest vernacu- lar example of Federal period architeçture in Cambridge.
