Originally located on Massachusetts Avenue, the house was moved in the 1840s when the district was cut up into lots.
Later bay additions on each side of the house enlarged the small interior spaces- The house abuts up to another early house, the David Frost home at 26 Gray Street. The original owner was Elizabeth Frost whose nusband, Gideon Frost, died before the house was completed. She rented out the house for ar income producing property. 10. Built in 1812, the Elizabeth Frost Tenant House is associated with one of Cambridge's prominent early families, one which had already ac- quired extensive landholdings by 1800. The Frost House was built as rental property by Gideon Frost, who died before the construction was completed. The house was inherited by his wife Elizabeth, who had it moved to its present site on Bowdoin Street in 1846 from its original site at 1700 Massachusetts Avenue.
Gideon Frost was a fourth generation member of the Frost family, which had been established in Cambridge since 1700. Frost acquired his own estate in 1763, and his heirs retained possession of most of the property through the early decades of the nineteenth century. Frost's own house (c. 1753), known as the Frost-waterhouse House, stands at 7 Waterhouse Street in the Cambridge Common N.R.D. Bowdoin Street lies in the northernmost of the three master blocks which comprise the Lower Common district. The Lower Common was originally part of the Cambridge Cow Common, and is an area of about 63 acres that was divided in 1724 among the Proprietors into twenty parcels ranging from one to five and three-quarters acres. Many of the original boun- daries can be distinguished in the present street layout of the area, particularly Bowdoin Street and the streets parallel to it.
Bowdoin Street was laid out in 1842; several years later, in 1846, the Federal style Elizabeth Frost Tenant House was moved to its Bowdoin Street lot. The house, one.of ten built between 1800-1833 which survive in Old Cam- bridge, is important as one of the few built during a relatively stagnant period in the history of this part of the City. The Elizabeth Frost Tenant House is significant under Criterion A for its associations with the development of the North Avenue community, and under Criterion C as an important example of its type and style.
