Explain the historical/architectural importance of this area. Garfield Street is an outstanding example of a late nineteenth century Queen Anne period development and provides an excellent catalogue of Queen Anne architecture. The street was laid out in 1883 and built up between 1885 and 1891; all but three of these original houses remain. Most were architect-designed, and range from small side-entrance houses averaging $4500. in cost, to full- blówn Queen Anne examples costing as much as. $10,000.
Although unity 1s provided by the consistency of lot size, setback and house height, the impression of the street is one of diversity, with a wide variety of forms and abundant decorative detail. Many of the houses have wrap-around porches, towers and and a rich variety of surface textures and embellishments. Mastic work, terra cotta in swirling foliated patterns, and porch posts and balusters of varying silhouettes are particularly prominent, wandows vary in size and placement, and include mulh . colored and leaded glass. The houses are all well-maintained and the street retains its original nineteenth century appearance. 1. Herbert Shapherd House (1886), 31-33 Garfield Street A center-hall, cross-gable Queen Anne house built by Herbert Notable features of the elaborate porch include cast ornament in the form of a woman's head in the gable, a spindle screen and turned posts. 2.
Edward Shephord House (1885), 39 Garfield Street This gable-roofed Queen Anne house contains a Palladian motif in the gable. The unusual porch has jigsaw ornament including rosettes, in the spandreis. This was the home ot boston bookkeeper Edward Shepherd. 3. J. W. Estabrook House (1886), 45 Garfield Street A hip-roofed Queen Anne house with a deep porch across the racade, this 1886 structure has a round oriel bay on the corner with a pagoda turret. Bartlett House (1888), 49 Garfield Street Architect Eugene Clark designed this Queen Anne house. The wrap-around porch encircles a three-story conical turret. 5. Dewey House (1889), 55 Garfield Street This Queen Anne house is almost Shingle style in feeling. The arcaded, wrap-around porch has shingled posts. The house was designed by Eugene Clark. 6. Cornelius Sullivan House (1889), 67 Garfield Street A classic example of the Queen Anne style with a gable roof and full-width porch with a spindle screen. 7. John Rollins House (1891), 16 Garfield Street William Sidebottóm was the architect of this Queen Anne house with a two-story, corner octagonal bay. A square oriel with rounded corners is located in the center of the facade.
Edward Wood House (1886), 18 Garfield Street This Queen Anne dwelling has outstanding porch detail; a sun- burst pattern in the gable and cut-out scroll decoration beneath a spindle screen. The house was designed by architect John Steadman. 9. Robert Farquhar House (1890), 34 Garfield Street A Queen Anne house with a polygonal corner turret and a wrap- around porch supporting a balustraded balcony. The detailing :a Balysonadedbaer ry. turtandea ynane is Colonial Revival in style. 10. Sarah Coon House (1887), 36 Garfield Street James Fogerty was the architect of this cross-gabled Queen Anne house with a corner turret. 11. Bertha Thayer House (1888), 44 Garfield Street This cross-gabled Queen Anne house with a corner turret and a deep full-width porch was designed by architect Eugene Clark.

George Worcester House (1890), 58 Garfield Street A Queen Anne house with a gable-on-hip roof and Colonial Revival detail. 14. Frank Allen House (1891), 64 Garfield Street This Queen Anne house has a wrap-around porch with clustered columns and a corner octagonal bay. 15. Charles Farnsworth House (1897), 74 Garfield Street This late Queen Anne house was designed by architect William Goodwin.
Notable features include an octagonal bay supporting a balcony and a deep wrap-around porch. 16. Elijah Ball House (1887), 80 Garfield Street A Queen Anne-Stick style house with excellent pavilion treatment, designed by architect James Fogerty. The Garfield Street National Register District includes both sides of Garfield Street from Massachusetts Avenue to Oxford Street (see Cambridge Community Development P. D. Quad Map 11). Its boundaries delineate a dense nineteenth century streetscape of Queen Anne residences.
