The building: a former tavern, was moved to its present location from Duxbury in 1930, anc restored by architect Clarence W. Brazer. 10. PUIIIL INU: OC II.B.2 The Hall Tavern-Cecil Fraser House at 20 Grey Gardens West was built in South Duxbury, Massachusetts, and moved to Cambridge in 1930. It is a two-story, five-bay, center entrance house with a hip roof and a central chimney. The style is Federal, with residual High Georgian details such as the Doric entablature and pilasters that frame the elliptical doorway and the wide corner boards that are scored and painted to resemble quoins. An elaborate cornice molding includes diminutive trumpet corbels used like dentils. The shingled wall surface is an original detail.
The house is unchanged from its original appearance in Duxbury. This house is one of several Georgian and Federal period houses in Cambridge that were moved for restoration purposes in the 1920s, an indication of the regard with which houses of this period were then held. Demolition of such houses, which occurred frequently in Cambridge and elsewhere between 1890 and 1920, led to the founding of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. Among the houses that were moved for restoration at that time are the John Palmer House, moved from 45 Brattle Street to 11 Hawthorne Street in 1926 (O1d Cam- bridge N.R.D.), and the Edward Marrett House, moved to Manchester, Massachusetts, also in 1926.
The-area to which the house was moved, Grey Gardens, was a real estate subdivision of 1922 that "provides the best illustration in the city of the domestic architecture of the 1920s".* The majority of the buildings on the 8 1/2 acre tract were built between 1922 and 1930, ard all are Georgian Revival. The Hall Tavern is, not surprisingly, the most authentic and sophisticated of the lot. The Hall Tavern meets Criterion C as significantly representative of its type and period. The move in 1930 took place over fifty years , ago, and the house has gained additional significance in its new site. *Report Four: Old Cambridge of the Survey of Architectural History in Cambridge, p. 54. Cecil Fraser was responsible for moving the house from Duxbury, and lived in it afterwards; he was President of the Buckingham School (local, private, secondary school) and a dean of the Harvard Business School.
