The rest of the house remains substantially as Sturgis and Brigham designed it in 1872. Stick Style detailing articulates the facades, particularly in a band between the stories. It was built by E.w.
Hooper, and purchased in 1902 by the Reverend Samuel A. Eliot. Rev. Eliot was a son of Charles W. Elio, President of Harvard from 1869-1909. A Unitarian minister, Samuel Eliot was named for his grandfather, Mayorof Boston from 1837-1840, and was a secretary and later president of the American Unitarian 10. The Hooper-Eliot House was built in 1872 to the plans drawn by the firm of Sturgis & Brigham, and was cited in Report Four: Old Cambridge of the Survey of Architectural History in Cambridge as a pioneering effort by this firm to popularize the Georgian Revival.
John Sturgis had made measured drawings of the staircase of the John Hancock House before it was demolished in 1863, and had had the opportunity to study Georgian architecture in England during many years residence there. On his return to this country, Sturgis became one of the earliest to espouse the revival of Colonial architecture. This is seen in the Hooper House in the gambrel roof and five-bay, center entrance facade, and is reinforced by the main stairway patterned after that in the Hancock House. The Carey House at 28 Fayerweather Street, designed by the same firm in 1882, makes use of some of the same Georgian vocabulary (see Report Four: old Cambridge, page 117). The entrance was remodelled in 1902 in an academic Georgian style by the architect Lois Lilley Howe. Samuel A.
Eliot (1862-1950) returned to Cambridge from mission service in Oregon Territory in 1898 at the age of 36, and purchased the house in 1902. He lived the rest of his life there, during which time he was president of the American Unitarian Association and pastor of the Arlington Street Church. Accordingly, the house is significant under Criterion B for its associations with-Eliot and under Criterions A and C as an important early work in theiGeorgian Revival style. His career is summarized below in a memorial note by Lois Lilley Howe: The Reverend Samuel Atkins Eliot was born here in Cambridge in 1862. He was graduated from Harvard Colíege in 1884 and after three years of attendance at the Divinity School, received the degree of A.M. in 1889. - S.T.D. in 1925.
After holding pastorates in Denver, Colorado, and in Brooklyn, New York, he returned to Boston in 1898 to be Secretary and later Presi- dent.of the American Unitarian Association. In this position he showed great initiative as well as exceptional financial and or- ganizing ability. When he resigned after twenty-seven years' ser- vice, he left the Association far stronger in financial resources and in the equipment of a fine new building and far more efficient in its service to the Unitarian churches than it had even been. before. In 1927 he returned with enthusiasm to the exercise of his chosen profession, that of the ministry. He became minister, later minister- emeritus of the Arlington Street Church in Boston.
There he won the affectionate admiration of the members of what he termed the church he 'had the honor to serve.' (see over - continued) Staple to Inventory form at botton In spite of his many associations with Boston, he will always be identified with Cambridge, the city of his birth. Here he spent the greater part of his life. Here was the background of his ex- tremely happy marriage, lasting more than sixty years and with seven children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren to 'rise up and call him blessed.' He not only took his part in many civic groups in Boston and in Cambridge, but he was a member of an enormous number of important national and international organizations.
He was no superficial 'joiner', satisfied with paying an annual fee, but an interested working member, traveling far and wide to gain and give information, help, and counsel wherever they were needed....* *Published in the Cambridge Historical Society Proceedings, Vol. 34, 1951. - Like the handful of other early examples of the Georgian Revival style, this one 1s by no means pure in its interpretation. Rather, it combines Georgian Revival elements with those of other current styles, most notably, in this case, the Stick Style.
