The leaded stained glass in the entrance door is later, but the cast iron fence in front is original. The flush-boarded facade is scored to simulate ashlar masonry. William R. (2865) This William R. Jones House is notable as one of three surviving houses in the city built in the Mansard style with a curvilinear facade gable. The house is also important as a substantial residence of high quality which played a role in the early suburbanization of Cambridge. When Harvard Street was completed in 1808, it served as a link between Harvard Square and Boston via the West Boston Bridge.
The street was therefore promoted by real estate agents as a prestigious residential address with great convenience for commuters to Boston. The Jones House was built for a prosperous Boston soap manufacturer. The Jones House gains further significance as one of only ten surviving single family homes on Harvard Street, which was once lined with large residences set on elevated sites above the street. Built on land that was once formerly part of the Dana estate, the portion of Harvard Street between Prospect Street and Massachusetts Avenue was divided into house lots in the 1830s, and by 1854 thirty-three houses had been built. Fully built up by 1900, Harvard Street was one of the handsomest streets in Cambridge.
The William Jones House is significant under Criterion A for its role in the development of Harvard Street and Dana Hill, and under Criterion C as an important example of its type and style.
