Explain the historical/architectural importance of this area. Maple Avenue is one of the most attractive streets in Dana Hill and is especially notable for its Mansard houses. The street was first laid out in 1841 and featured larger lots than the other streets between Broadway and Cambridge Street. A series of fine Mansards interspersed with Queen Anne and Colonial Revival houses line the avenue. The houses are widely spaced and somewhat uneven in height and size, with Mansard roofs and bay windows creating a rhythimic pattern. The street retains much of its original nine- teenth century appearance. 1. Charles B. Stevens House (1873), 8 Maple Avenue This late Mansard house is particularly notable for its aggres- sive outline and verticality, and exemplifies the break with the formal academic style of the 1860s. The house was built, for Charles B.
Stevens, at one time the Middlesex County Registrar of Deeds and a Common Councilman in Cambridge from 1864-65. 2. Lewis Hall House (1867), 23 Maple Avenue * sodo g nooie mid This solid and dignified house is symmetrically organized around The smooth, rusticated walls are capped by a block-like roof. This was the residenee of Lewis Hall, an East Cambridge lumber dealer. Philip Munroe House (1887), 31 Maple Avenue This side-hall Mansard has a steep, straight-edged roof and porch with paired columns and curvilinear under-boards. Francis B. Webster House (1861), 20 Maple Avenue This handsome Mansard house has a flush-boarded facade and a curvilinear Mansard gable above the center pavilion. The Maple Avenue National Register District includes both sides of Maple Avenue from Marie Avenue to Broadway (see Cambridge Community Development P. D. Quad Maps 3 & 10).

Boundary Justification/Intrusions The boundaries of the Maple Avenue National Register District were drawn to include the concentration of single-family mid 19th to early 20th century residences. The district is especially important for its concentration of elegant Italianate /Mansard style houses. It is distinguished from its surroundings by increasing concentrations of multiple-family dwellings. #31 two-story side hall Mansard style; asbestos siding, slate roof, brick foundation; double multi-pane doors of the Queen Anne style.
