Form No: MC II.C.9 Prior to the inauguration of the house system of residential colleges about 1930, under President Lowell of Harvard, undergraduates were encouraged to seek their own lodgings in the town and only minimal accommodations were maintained in the Harvard Yard dormitories. This policy had been in effect under the Presidency of Charles W.
Eliot (1869-1904), and led to the construction of a large number of special- ized apartment buildings designed to meet the needs of wealthy under- graduates. The more elaborate of these buildings had suites of rooms vith working fireplaces and rooms for the student's valet, along with such amenities as squash courts and swimming tanks; at Ware Hall, the drawing card was an elaborate ballroom where meals were served. These buildings were quite out of context for Cambridge of the 1890s, as they were invariably of masonry construction four to five stories high, with elaborate if not ostentatious detailing.
A concentration of such buildings on Mount Auburn Street near Harvard Square gave that area the popular name of "the Gold Coast" (nominated to the National Regis- Another notable example is "The Craigie" (Josephine Wright Chapman, 1897, also nominated), on Mount Auburn Street west of Harvard Square. Buildings of this type are easily distinguishable by their age and quality of detail from the less elaborate apartment buildings built for the general rental market after the opening of the subway in 1912. The location of Ware Hall in this residential section of Mid Cambridge demonstrates the spread oi this specialized type oi structure away from Harvard Square, and illustrates the impact of the University on the development of this section of the city.
Ware Hall meets criterion A for its associations with the development of Mid-Cambridae and Harvard University, and criterion C as an example of its type and period.
