Description of the property

The house at 1224 South Main Street, Findlay, Ohio, was built by Dr. Albert Linaweaver In 1904. Dr. Linaweaver was a prominent Findlay physician, photographer and well-known house which is a fine example of Neo-Classical Revival architecture. Four massive Corinthian colums support the two-story pedimented portico which extends is carried throughout the house in the woodwork, selected windows, and in the garden fence. unchanged from when it was built except for the removal of small clay modillions around the fascia on the roofline. These modillions were removed as they began to deteriorate. and living room feature Doric pillars, elaborate woodwork, and leaded glass windows.

Statement of significance

(in one paragraph) The Dr. Albert Linaweaver house is an architectural and historical representation of the house is an outstanding example of Neo-Classical Revival architecture which displays the taste and cultural growth of the community at the turn-of-the-century. Natural gas and oil were discovered in Findlay in the mid-1880s. The first gas well, which was discovered in 1886, produced an initial flow measured at 12,000,000 cubic feet daily. As the new well confirmed the existance of what seemed to be an inexhaustible The gas era progressed steadily through the 1880s in Findlay, but by 1890 the wells began Hancock county enabled the community to hold most of its "boom" progress through the 1890s and into the new century. Oil brought new wealth and economic stability to the city.

The major development associated with the discovery of oil was the organization The rapid industrial growth hot only boosted Findlay's economy but also increased the community's population and standard of living. In 1880, Findlay's population had totaled made overnight and elegant homes, of which the Linaweaver house is an example, were built.
