Set on a hammered granite foundation, the house is one-storey high, built of brick laid in stretcher bond (north) and common bond elsewhere.
The original section of the house has a rectangular plan with inter ior end chimneys rising through its gables; at the east end of the house is a wood-frame, Greek Revival Style ell, probably built in the mid-1840's. The house's facade is symmetrical about a center entry and is undecorated. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Built on the same lot and for the same owner as the Aldrich Saw Mill (Form #8-4), the Daniel Aldrich Cottage possesses historical significance with the Aldrich family and their use of this site for a saw mill and wheel- wright shop during the mid-nineteenth century. This cottage seems to have served as the home of Daniel Aldrich from the 1830's until his death in the late nineteenth century, after which it became the property of his son, Gideon.
(see form 8-4 - Aldrich Saw Mill for biographical information) The Daniel Aldrich Cottage possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and feeling, as well as historical assocations with Daniel Aldrich, a local wheelwright and member of a locally prominent Quaker family. The Aldrich Cottage meets criteria B and C of the NRHP. The saw mill sits on a high foundation of split granite blocks and is a one-storey wood frame structure with a pitched roof. Elevations are undecorated and have 6/6 windows. The north elevation is gabled; it has a shed addition containing an entry at the first storey and two windows at each storey.
SEE CONTINUATION SHEET HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Aldrich Saw Mill possesses historical significance both as an example of a pre-industrial saw mill and for its associations with the Aldrich family. The earliest member of the family known to have occupied this site was Daniel H. Aldrich, a wheelwright. As an 1830 map of Uxbridge indicates no saw mill or mill pond in this vicinity and as the neighboring Aldrich houses are all of late Federal design, it seems likely that Aldrich who was a Quaker moved here and established the mill in the 1830's. In the industrial census of 1850, Aldrich is listed as employing three men to produce wagons, shingles, lumber and boards, using hand labor and water power.
Although Aldrich still owned the mill as late as 1870, he is not listed in subsequent industrial censuses. Late in the nineteenth century, presumably after the death of Daniel Aldrich, the mill became the property of his son, Gideon, who was born in Ux- bridge in 1834. Although the younger Aldrich was also trained as a wheelwright - beeamen the propngeretadr ch vness with ainuaas anheds otv ian pas slao rinodn e aeoletigne by 1880 he had entered a lumber and retail business with Augustus Daniels of Southbridge. Secondary sources are unclear as to whether this partnership used the Aldrich Mill. The Aldrich Sawmitt possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and feeling, as well as historical associations as Uxbridge's best preserved pre-industrial mill. The Sawmill meets criteria A, C and D of the NRHP.
