Aldrich House (Form #18-3) and Daniel Aldrich Cottage (Form #8-4), the S. Aldrich House is a good local example of late Federalist architecture, one which appears to have been built near the end of the style's popularity.
The main house is a two-storey struct- ure with interior end wall chimneys; at the building's west end is a recent one storey, wood-frame ell. The main house rests on a hammered granite foundation above which elevations are laid up in stretcher bond; tie-rod plates are visibl at the level of the attic floor. SEE CONTINUATION SHEET HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Deriving its principal historical significance from the preservation of its original, late Federalist design, the S. Aldrich House has few known historical associations. First known as the property of S. Aldrich in 1855, the house remained in Aldrich's possession until after 1870 when it became the property of E. Haywood (1898).
It seems likely that Aldrich was a member of a Quaker family and, perhaps, was the son or brother of Daniel Aldrich, who operated a saw mill and wheelwright shop nearby (Form #8-4) . The Aldrich House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship, as well as historical associations with the local adoption of masonry con- struction as a popular material for high-quality Federalist style houses. The Aldrich House meets criteria C of the NRHP. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE The facade (south) is symmetrical about a center-entry.
