Aldrich House is an excellent local example of the popular central-chimney type of house.
The building is two-stories high and rests on a rubble foundation which is now covered with a concrete apron. The facade (south) is slightly asymmetrical about a central entry which is framed by a 5- pane transom and moulded cap. Windows contain replacement sash (4/2) from the mid-nineteenth century; however, the size and placement of window openings appears to be unaltered from the eighteenth century; some windows retain 9/6 sash. On the south elevation of the chimney is a date placque (perhaps orig- inal) bearing the numerals 1786 (possibly 1756-unclear from street); either dat would be a plausible date of construction.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Aldrich is exceptional both for the apparent retention of its origina: fenestration and for its rural site which preserves much of the appearance of the house's original setting. The house has few known historical associations; during much of the nineteenth century it was occupied by W. Aldrich who also owned a saw & grist mill on the opposite side of Henry Street, south of the house. By 1898, the property, including both the mill and a barn on the south side of Henry Street, was owned by Polly A. Henry, a member of a large family of Henry's who farmed much of the surrounding area. The W.
Aldrich House possesses integrity of location, design, setting and workmanship, and preserves rare elements of its eighteenth-century design, including original window openings and date plaque set in the chimney.
