Virtually un- altered, the Bank Building is a rectangular structure, three stories high with a low hip roof surrounded by a cornice and parapet. The building stands on a granite foundation and has a symmetrical facade (west) which contains at the first storey a center entry flanked by two storefronts.
Each storefront is original, consisting of a center entry flanked by plate-glass windows set in wood surrounds and framed by cast-iron columns with stylized Corinthian capitals. SEE CONTINUATION SHEET HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) One of few commercial blocks built in Uxbridge during the nineteenth century, the Bank derives historical significance both from its architecture and from its association with the Blackstone National Bank and the Uxbridge Savings Bank which shared space in this building between 1896 and 1914 before moving to a building built by the banks (form #48-UA-232).
Organized by local manufacturers and merchants in 1825, the Blackstone National Bank had occupied quarters in the Capron Building (#2 South Main Street-now destroyed) since 1827, paying only "one peppercorn" annually to the Capron Family for rent. the Capron Building burned in 1896, the Blackstone National Bank together with the Uxbridge Savings Bank (inc. 1870) rented space in this block, which may have been under construction prior to the fire. Original ownership of the Bank Building in unclear; local atlases list the two banks as owners, however a history of the bank implies that the building was constructed by an individ- ual or association of individuals, unrelated (corporately) to the banks (Blackstone 1925: 22).
The importance of the Blackstone National Bank to local manufacturers who depended on it to discount notes from distant customers, and the bank's apparently brisk business had already, in 1888, encouraged the ob- servation: A good first-class business block in the site just south of the National Bank, arranged for stores, banking-rooms and offices, would supply a much-needed want, and would be occupied at good rent as soon as completed (Hurd 1888 I: 173) SEE CONTINUATION SHEET BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Blackstone National Bank, One Hundred Years of Banking.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Fenestration of the facade's second and third stories is identical, having single 1/1 windows in the central and outer bays, and paired 1/1 windows in all other bays. Windows have rock-faced granite sills and lintels; separating second and third storey windows are panels of decorative brick-. work. Centered over the second storey window is a granite panel inscribed "Bank Building". Other elevations are asymmetrical, undecorated except for a moulded cornice and contain mostly 1/1 sash.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Whoever built the current block followed the foregoing suggestion closely, constructing the Bank Building to contain two storefronts at the first storey, offices at the second storey and a public hall at the third storey- The Bank Building possesses integrity of location,, design, setting, materials and workmanship, and is significant as Uxbridge's most ornate example of late Victorian commercial architecture.
