Brown House is a good local example of the popular central-chimney house type, although in contrast to its vernacular design, the house is decor- ated with exceptionally fine Federalist style trim.
The house consists of a main two-storey section (east) set on a foundation of hammered granite and wind (west) built in the twentieth century on a poured concrete foundation. The facade (south) of the main house is framed by narrow pilasters which sup- port an ornate Federalist cornice. At the facade's center is an entry framed by pilasters supporting a band of lozenges, a frieze of swags and a cornice with mutules. SEE CONTINUATION SHEET HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Brown House derives most of its significance from its fine Federalist detail, as the building has few known historical associations. Although marker onthe Map of 1855, its owner's name is unknown until 1857 when it was owned by E.
Brown, perhaps a son of Elihu Brown who had been a blacksmith at Uxbridgt Center until his death in 1840. In 1870, the house was owned by "Mrs. Nolan" and in 1898 by Miss Abbie B. Nolan. Neither Nolan is mentioned in secondary sources. The E. Brown House possesses integrity of location, design, setting and workmanship, and is significant primarily for its well-preserved Federalist style details which include an entry decorated with garlands and swags in low relief, narrow pilasters and a complex cornice. The Brown House meets criteria C of the NRHP. Brown House Indicate each item on inventory form which is being continued below. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Within this frame is a six-panel door (replacement), sidelights and an elliptical fan. The decoration of the doorway and of the cornice appear to be executed entirely in carved wood and not in composition pieces. Much of this decoration resembles patterns illustrated in the early architectural guidebooks of Asher Benjamin and may have been made by a local carver follow- ing Benjamin's models.
