The building rests on a rock-faced granite foundation and is built of red brick laid in common bond, except for the north elevation which is wood-frame above the first storey.

Building corners are trimmed with heavy pilasters and window openings are framed by rectangular lintels of rock-faced granite. Elevations are asymmetrical; the gable of the south elevation is framed as a pediment by a brick cornice. A one-storey brick addition (ca.1900) exists at the north end. South of the block is a timber- frame barn set on granite piers. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Butler Block has few known historical associations. Built immed- iately east of the Providence and Worcester Railroad bed, the block was more directly connected (both by road and visually) to the neighboring village of Linwood (Northbridge) prior to the elevation of North Main Street (Route #122) in the twentieth century. Owned by A.

Butler as early as 1855, the block was labelled as a store in 1857. Subsequent atlases mark it as the property of A. Butler (1870) and Mrs. Rebecca Butler (1898). The building's plan, prox- imity to the railroad bed and physical resemblance to Goldthwaite's Block (ca. 1845, burned 1895) at Uxbridge Center, suggest that the structure served both as a store and as the Butler's residence or as a boarding house. The Butler Block possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship, and is significant as the only local example of Greek Revival style com- -mercial architecture, one which preserves its original decorative details. The Butler Block meets criteria C of the NRHP. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Maps & Atlases: 1855, 1857, 1870, 1898 OWNER: Charles M.
