Built on a foundation of hammered granite and enclose by a hip roof, the house consists of a two-storey brick front section (east), a two-storey brick and wood ell (west) and a re-built brick stable(southwest).
The front section is rectangular in plan with interior end wall chimneys and a symmetrical center-entrance facade. The entry is set beneath an elliptical arc and consists of a six-panel door flanked by colonnettes which rise to stylized papyrus capitals and an entablature decorated with incised fans. SEE CONTINUATION SHEET HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Together with the Robert Taft House (Form #48A-158) and the Deacon William Capron House (Form #48-127), the George Carpenter House preserves one of Uxbridge's most sophisticated examples of Federalist architecture. Knowledge of Carpenter is fragmentary;in 1814 he and his brother (?), John, built a billy and a jenny to be bnstalle n e Rvlet MlFrm A sbsegntly te two bullt billies and jennies which were installed in the Capron Mill when it was en- larged in 1824. The 1830 Map of Uxbridge indicates a shuttle manufactory on the same site where George and John Carpenter are known to have had a mill known as the Shuttle Shop(south of Douglas Street and in between Carney and Main Streets); however, a 1832 industrial census fails to list either John or George Carpenter. The only additional information on either is recorded in an 1850 industrial census which reported that John Carpenter employed two people making Table, Bedsteads, Coffins and "Sundries" by hand.
It seems likely that George & John Carpenter were essentially cabinet makers who adapted part of their water-powered mill to the turning of spindles and production of shuttles iduring the early nineteenth century; by the 1830's, the Carpenters either sold their business, or perhaps, found as Jerry Wheelock did (Form #43-G) that the competition from large machine shops in Worcester made it difficult for small- scale manufacturers to compete. By 1870, the Carpenter House was owned by H.P. Slater, a house carpenter, who owned it for the remainder of the nineteenth century.

Carpenter House Indicate each item on inventory form which is being continued below. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Flanking the door and surmounting it are leaded lights. Windows of the facade and south elevation have panelled granite lintels; extending along these two elevations is a beaded cornice. The ell may originally have been only one-storey high, built of brick.
Its wood second storey and wide entablature/cornice suggest that the ell was enlarged around 1840- 1850, at which time the hip roof may have been increased in height to cover the whole building.
