Cook House preserves the scale, plan and some of the details of its original construction, perhaps dating from the mid- eighteenth century.
The house is a one-storey timber-frame cottage with a central chimney. The facade (south) is not visible from the road; it is asymmetrical, having a central entry with one window west of it and two east of it. Other elevations are asymmetrical and have window openings which appear to have been rebuilt in the twentieth century except in the gables where projecting window frames (ca. 1800 or earlier) remain with replacement sash (2/2) - HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Built without reference to the current road bed, the Cook House is probably one of the older remaining farmhouses in South Uxbridge, perhaps dating from the mid-eighteenth century. Although altered by modern sash, the house preserves the plan and scale of its original design as well as its rural site.
The house was owned by E. Cook (1855) and A. Cook (1857 & 1870), the latter of whom was listed merely as a "tiller of the ground" in 1870. By 1898, the house and the barn which once stood east of it belonged to John Hickey, a farmer. The A. E. Cook House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, workmanship and feeling, and serves as an important local example of a popular house type of the eighteenth century, and one which retains its rural setting. The Cook House meets criteria C of the NRHP.
