Virtualiy unaltered from its original design, the house is a l½ storey wood-frame building with a side-hall floor plan. The house rests on a rock-faced granite foundation and is enclosed by a pitched roof. The facade (east) has a pedimented gable supported by four Doric porches, behir which is a recessed porch.
The entry consists of a panelled door (original) framed by sidelights and panelled stiles with corner blocks and a decorative central panel above the door. The recessed porch on Doric columns continues along much of the south elevation. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Noteworthy primarily for its well-preserved architecture, the Deane Cottage possesses historical associations with Francis Dean, a local attorney for whom the house was probably built. Deane occupied the house until after 1870 when it passed into the ownership of Edward J. Prest. Secondary sources do not mention either owner.
The Francis Deane Cottage possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship, as well as historical associations as one of Uxbridge's best preserved examples of Greek Revival style residential architecture, one which preserves its Doric porch, pedimented gables and corner-blocked window and door casings. The Deane Cottage meets criteria A and C of the NRHP. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Maps & Atlases: OWNER: Doris M.
