The building is constructed of brick, three-stories high with undecorated side walls (north & south). Its facade is symmetrical; at the first storey it contains two storefronts (boarded over) surmounted by a metal cornice. The upper two floors are divided by blind arches into three bays, each bay contains paired windows at each storey; between the arches are decor- ative brick panels. At the roof line is a pressed metal cornice decorated with modillions and egg-and-dart mouldings.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Farnum Block derives its historical significance principally from its design which represents the largest scale of commercial development achieve in Uxbridge during the nineteenth century. Following a characteristic late Victorian plan, the block was built to contain stores at the first storey, storage and office space at the second storey and a public hall at the third storey. Evidence for the building's date of construction is circumstantial; on March 19, 1895, a fire destroyed several commercial buildings around this site. As these buildings were occupied at the time of their destruction, it is likely that re-building took place soon after the ruins were cleared away. By 1898, the Farnum Block is indicated on this site.
Of the building's first owner, H.S.Farnum, nothing is known. The Farnum Block possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship, as well as historical associations with the reconstruction of Uxbridge Center's commercial district following two fires in the mid-1890s.
