The house is a one-storey building with a rectangular floor plan and interior, end-wall chimneys which rise through the ridge of the house's pitched roof. Th. facade is laid up in Flemish bond with blackened headers; it is symmetrical about a recessed center entry which is flanked by four 9/1 windows (originally 9/9). The entry contains a double door (ca. 1830?) and three-pane transom.
SEE CONTINUATION SHEET HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) In addition to its exceptional architecture, the Farnum House possesses historical associations with the Farnum family who settled Uxbridge and part- icularly with Moses Farnum who served as minister of Uxbridge's Society of Friends. Land on which the house stands may have been part of the original proprietors'grants to Moses Farnum, Sr., the son of Cornet John Farnum who settled near Uxbridge Center in the early eighteenth century(Form #47-93)- Through inheritance from his father and by purchase, Moses Farnum, Jr.
(1730- 1780) assembled an enormous farm in the vicinity of this house; the younger Farnum's holdings during the mid-eighteenth century are reported to have covere an area of one mile by 289 rods on the east side of the "Great River" (Blackston and even more on the river's west banks where Moses Farnum, Jr. built his brick house in 1769. Information about Moses Fahum, Jr. comes mostly from the records of the Smithfield (Rhode Island) Society of Friends and from the Uxbridge Society of Friends. Farnum is known to have married Sarah Comstock of the Smithfield Society in 1752 and also to have kept a store in South Uxbridge. In 1769, Farnum was one of a committee which was formed to build a Quaker meetinghouse and establish a separate meeting in Uxbridge, where a large number of Quakers had lived since the early eighteenth century.
Farnum was involved in the building of the meetinghouse(Form #10-1) which was built on land that he sold to the society; upon the building's completion, Farnum became the "minister" of the new society, a position which he held until his death. In addition to his anti-slavery ideas, Farnum held firmly to pacifism, opposing local taxes to support the Revolutionary War and being outspoken in his opposition to Uxbridge citizens' enlisting for military service. Farnum House Indicate each item on inventory form which is being continued below. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Side and rear elevations are laid up in a common bond of 3 rows of stretchers to each row of headers. Window openings contain 9/1 sash set beneath brick arches (Ist storey)- The rear elevation (west) also contains a central entry flanked by two windows, although it lacks the decorative bonding of the facade. Bricks for the house are believed to have been made in Uxbridge by Auanias Gifford, a brickmaker who also made the bricks for the Friends' Meetinghouse of 1770 (Form #10-1). HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Although Farnum's arrest was ordered at one time, the order was not carried out, as authorities were convinced of Farnum's un-political motives. Following Farnum's death, the house passed to his son Moses, III, and descended in the family until the twentieth century.
The Farnum House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and feeling, as well as historical associations with Moses Farnum, a locally prominent Quaker.
