The building is rectangular in plan, built of alternating wide and narrow courses of rock-faced granite ashlar. Cornices are trimmed with simple Italianate style brackets and sash is of two sizes of 6/6.
SEE CONTINUATION SHEET HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) In addition to the integrity of its original design, the Granite Store possesses historical associations with the expansion of Hecie- Village, as a mill village. he building's facade and plan remindsathat of the Rogerson Block of the 1820's (Form #47-B), although at a smaller scale. This similarity of plan and elevation suggests that like the Rogerson the Granite Store may have been planned to contain a store (first storey) and a commúntiy hall (second storey). Early ownership of the building is unclear. In 1855, a building owned by P. Cummings is marked in this location; however, it is not until 1870 that the present building was clearly labelled on this site.
In 1870, the Granite Store was marked as the property of G.R.Spaulding; however, Spaulding may merely have operated a company store here for the owners of the Hecla Mill. The listing which follows Spaulding's name on the 1870 Atlas's directory, suggests that Spaulding also ran a company-owned farm at Hecla Village. The Granite Store possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship, as well as historical associations with the development of Hecla Village as workers' housing for the nearly Hecla Mill. The Granite Store meets criteria A and C of the NRHP.
