UTM: Quad Ux 19 282130 4661820 (Staple additional sheets h Form #48-114 ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) The Hayward House is an outstanding local example of mid-Victorian Italianate architecture not only for the design of the main house but also for its stable and granite wall. The house is a 2½ storey wood-frame structure built on a granite foundation and enclosed by a pitched roof.
The facade is symmetrical about a gabled, central pavilion, the first storey of which contain panelled doors in an arched surround. Set in front of the facade is an Ionic porch with lattice railings; this porch may have been re-built to its present appearance around 1900. The west elevation contains two bay windows at the first storey and paired 1/1 sash set in frames with bracketed caps at the second storey. SEE CONTINUATION SHEET HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Hayward House possesses historical associations with William E. Hayward, a local banker and industrialist. Born in Mendon in 1839, Hayward moved to Uxbridge in 1841.
After graduating from Macomber Academy in Uxbridge, Hayward became a clerk at the Blackstone National Bank, a position which he occupied for six years before entering the wool manufacturing business. For 13 years during the 1860's and 1870's, Hayward was a partner in the firm of Capron & Hayward which manufactured satinets at the Capron Mill at Uxbridge Center (now demolished). During the 1880's, Hayward had an interest in the firm of Hayward, Taft & Company which ran a woolen mill at Proctorsville, Vermont; Hayward also owned a mill in partnership with Moses Taft at East Douglas, Massachusetts.
After 1870, Hayward was a trustee of the Uxbridge Savings Bank, although he became more widely known as president of the Black- stone National Bank, a position which he held from 1893 at least as late as 1925 The William Hayward House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship from two periods of its development, as well as historical as- sociations with William Hayward, a prominent local textile manufacturer and banker. At the rear of the house (east) is an original stable, also re-sided in the early twentieth century- Along the property's street frontage is a dressed granite retaining wall with square posts.
